Ludhiana: MC officials have filed an FIR against 10 dairy operators in Tajpur Dairy Complex for dumping animal waste into the Buddha Dariya. With dairy operators refusing to stop dumping animal waste into the drain despite repeated warnings, the issue has become a contentious one. It was also raised in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha committee meeting held on Friday.
Vidhan Sabha Committee chairman and local MLA Diljit Singh Grewal and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal took serious note of continued discharge of dairy waste into the Buddha Dariya.
A case was registered against operators of Ahuja Dairy, Vijay Kumar, Sarwan Singh, Ballu dairy, Chauhan dairy, Sundar Sham, Mang dairy, Bhola dairy, Bhushan dairy and Rajinder dairy on the complaint of the MC SDO.
With dairies under the scanner of both politicians and environmentalists, Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria visited Tajpur Dairy Complex during his Ludhiana tour. He expressed concern about the functioning of the effluent treatment plant (ETP) installed to treat animal discharge and directed officials concerned to work towards immediate improvement in the state of affairs.
For the past several months, Seechewal has been urging dairy owners to refrain from dumping cattle dung into the sewer or directly into Buddha Dariya. They have been instructed to dump waste at the place designated by the municipal corporation. However, dung is still being dumped in both the sewer and Buddha Dariya. It is also making its way to the ETP, which can cause damage to the machinery.
There are certain standards for operation of ETPs installed to treat discharge from dairies, according to which dairy operators are required to dump animal dung at a designated place. There is also a provision to filter the water used to wash the floor of dairies through two to three nets and send it to the treatment plant. However, these rules are not being followed properly.
