Pune: An onlooker was arrested on Tuesday, a day after he pushed and slapped a police constable twice on being asked to step aside as a crowd control measure after a fire broke out at the Modern Dairy in Camp on Monday night.
The onlooker, Shubhan Saudagar (38) from Bhimpura in Camp, was arrested for obstructing public servant from performing his duty and voluntarily causing harm to a public servant. A salesman with a garments store on MG Road, Saudagar was sent to Yerawada jail under magisterial custody for 14 days after he was produced before the Pune cantonment court.
A massive fire broke out on the terrace of Modern Dairy on Dr Saldhana Street around 8.45pm on Monday. The blaze was doused around 4am on Tuesday.
Assistant police inspector Sheetalkumar Gaikwad on Wednesday said,“The constable, Lokesh Kadam, and his colleagues were discharging duty to control the crowd assembled near the dairy.”
He said, “The policemen appealed to the public to disperse or move behind as a preventive measure, but Saudagar picked a dispute with Kadam and challenged his authority of instructing him to move behind. The policeman tried to convince him to abide by instructions because the safety of the public was also of importance in case the fire spread to other places.”
After the dispute between the two parties intensified, Saudagar suddenly pushed Kadam, slapped him twice and prevented him from discharging duty. A police team then took Saudagar into custody, Gaikwad said.
