Udhagamandalam: Minister for milk and dairy development T Mano Thangaraj inaugurated Women Primary Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society at Appukodu village in Ithalar panchayat of Ooty on Friday.
Constructed at a cost of 22 lakh, the society will assist local women in cattle rearing.
The minister disbursed 1.42 lakh worth loans on behalf of the district lead bank to eight women beneficiaries each to procure cows. “The Nilgiris is an apt place for cattle rearing as green fodder is easily available in the hills,” he said.
“Aavin requires more milk. Hence, we are encouraging the younger generation to take up cattle rearing. Milk producers are getting a uniform price for milk throughout the year from Aavin, irrespective of change in the market trend. Several initiatives are being taken up by the government to further develop Aavin,” the minister added.
Thangaraj visited an awareness programme on cattle rearing organised at Appukodu village and inaugurated an exhibition conducted as part of the Kalaignar centenary celebrations. He also inspected the Aavin milk production centre in Ooty.
Later in the evening, the minister held a review meeting with secretaries of cooperative societies and bankers regarding milk production in the Nilgiris.
