Surat: Teams of Sumul dairy, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and police raided a shop in the Kapodra area and seized duplicate being sold under the dairy’s brand name.
The raid was carried out in Hasmukha Hanuman Dairy and Bakery shop and its owner Kishan Viramgama (Patel) was arrested. Police seized eight pouches of duplicate ghee being sold as a Sumul brand.The ghee supplier identified as Pratik Thakkar was also booked.
Relevant sections of the IPC, Trademarks Act, Copyright Act and Prevention of Food Adulteration Act were invoked against the accused.
The complaint was filed by Sumul Dairy’s legal officer Dipesh Bhatt. On April 1, Bhatt got information that a dairy in Kapodra was selling duplicate ghee of the Sumul brand. Bhatt informed SMC food department officers Aparna Nayak and Sejal Vyas and the Kapodra police. They raided the dairy in Kaivatnagar Society along with two witnesses on Apr 1.
“Three pouches of one litre ghee and five pouches of 500 ML were seized. All the pouches had Sumul brand on them. When Bhatt checked, these did not belong to the batches produced by the dairy. When police asked Viramgama, he told them that a person Pratik Thakkar had supplied the ghee to him,” said police
Meanwhile, SMC officials have taken the ghee samples and sent them for laboratory tests
