Madurai: Aavin is aiming to boost its daily milk procurement to 2 lakh litres by the end of this year in Madurai district compared to last year procurement of 1.2 lakh litres per day, said dairy minister Mano Thangaraj, adding that the current procurement level is 1.7 lakh litres per day.
The minister inspected Aavin facilities in Madurai on Saturday.Talking to reporters, the minister said Aavin provides milk to its extensive network of consumers without any price hikes unlike private players who focus solely on profit. Aavin plays a crucial role in supporting milk producers and meeting the needs of consumers.
Thangaraj noted that Aavin offers an incentive of 3 per litre to milk producers and has implemented numerous measures to improve yield. Last year, the Tamil Nadu govt provided 90 crore in loans to milk producers in Madurai district through primary cooperative banks and societies. Additionally, mandatory insurance cover for farmers has been introduced to provide compensation in case of loss due to crop disease or cattle fatalities. Aavin aims to create 10,000 new dairy farmers in the state within the next year and distribute more cattle, he said.
Regarding complaints about delays in milk sachet distribution to agents and depots, the minister assured that the production process is well-planned and any delays are likely due to logistical issues, which are being addressed. Aavin is also exploring methods to improve its cold chain management to prevent spoilage of milk, he said. Madurai Aavin recorded a profit of 4.5 crore last year, and a profit of 3.9 crore as of June this year.
In response to recent comments by NTK leader Seeman about former chief minister Karunanidhi, Thangaraj stated that Seeman should control his language, asserting that he cannot achieve what Karunanidhi has accomplished even if he gets another lifetime.
