Jamshedpur: Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of AMUL and the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), recently announced that AMUL’s entry into the US market has been a great success. Now, AMUL is preparing to take its products to Europe, marking a historic step for the iconic Indian brand.
Mehta was speaking at the 11th Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration, held at a private business management institute. His speech, titled “AMUL Model: Transforming Lives of Millions,” focused on the growth of AMUL and India’s dairy industry. “India is now the largest producer of milk in the world,” Mehta said, noting that the country is on track to produce one-third of the world’s total milk in the coming years.

A lifeline for rural India
Mehta emphasised that the dairy business is not just about profits—it’s a crucial part of life for rural India. He highlighted how AMUL has been able to maintain its relevance by offering high-quality, protein-rich, organic, and chemical-free products that customers trust.
He also praised the cooperative system created by Dr. Verghese Kurien, AMUL’s founder, which he said has brought about a revolution in India’s dairy industry. “If India could give the world a gift, it would be the cooperative working system—a gift Dr. Kurien gave us,” Mehta said.
AMUL collects over 310 lakh liters of milk every day and operates 107 dairy plants across India. With a product range of over 50 items, AMUL sells an astonishing 22 billion packs annually. The company, owned by 36 lakh farmers, has an impressive turnover of Rs 80,000 crore and is now recognised as the strongest dairy and food brand in the world.
Nirmala Kurien, daughter of Dr. Verghese Kurien, also spoke at the event. She recalled how, over 50 years ago, her father dreamt of making India self-sufficient in milk production. Today, India has achieved that goal and stands proud as the world’s largest milk producer.
The Director of XLRI Jamshedpur, Fr. S George, closed the event by paying tribute to Dr. Verghese Kurien’s lifelong dedication to making a difference in the lives of millions of people.
