The firm developing the Amul brand, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), has indicated it intends to spend 600 crore rupees on an integrated dairy plant construction project in Kolkata. Jayen Mehta, GCMMF’s Managing Director, claims this facility will also have the biggest curd (dahi) processing plant in the world.
This investment pledge was made at the two day long Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), which concluded on Thursday.
According to PTI, Mehta stated “This will be an integrated dairy plant based in Kolkata, West Bengal and will have the largest unit in the world for the manufacture of curd with a daily production of 1000 metric tonnes.”
Further, he mentioned out of the overall investment on the dairy plant, approximately 600 crore rupees will be used, with the processing capacity of milk reaching 15 lakh liters ghe var da isa fa 15lpcd Mehta pointed out the high requirement of katori curd in Kolkata and the regions around it.
Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, based in Anand, will, as an official statement says, construct the dairy plant in two phases. It will be sited at the Sankrail Food Park in Hooghly, not far from Kolkata.
Curd enjoys immense popularity in the region. That is, ‘tok doi’ and ‘mishti doi’ as it is popularly known in Bengal. This plant aims to meet the growing demand for this traditional product.
Amul’s daily sell puts them at the top of other fresh milk brands in Bengal which is more than 10 lakh litres of milk a day.
The brand also boasts procured milk from over 1.2 lakh women dairy producers in 14 districts of Bengal.
The formation of this novel dairy plant shall aid in strengthening the dairy cooperative movements in the region of Bengal in context to the White Revolution II initiative by the ministry of cooperation, Government of India.
GCMMF in the last fiscal year had their turnover rise by 8 percent, reaching Rs 59,445 crore. Currently, the company does predict a double digit revenue increase in the fresh fiscal year due to the demand strength.
In the last fiscal year, on average, GCMMF processed around 500 lakh liters in a year, with its milk processing capacity reaching over 310 lakh liters per day.
Equal to 36 lakh Gujrat district farmers, GCMMF is the largest cooperatives owned dairy company. Its 18 members acquire 300 lakh liters of milk each day from its 18600 villages.
The company is placed eight in the list of top 20 world dairy companies by milk processing, as per IFCN reports,”
Besides the domestic business, GCMMF exports their products to about fifty markets across the world. The cooperative has also entered the United States market with four types of fresh milk aimed at the Indian and other Asian communities.”
During the BGBS 2025, West Bengal was pitched investment proposals of more than Rs 4.40 lakh crore, as stated by Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.”
