Vadodara: They are neither farmers nor veterinarians. Yet, this Vadodara-based doctor couple has emerged as one of the best cattle breeders in the state. Dr. Hema Modi and Dr Bhadresh Modi have bagged an award for adopting the best animal husbandry and dairying practices in the Gujarat government. The doctor couple was recently facilitated by the state animal husbandry department at National Forensic Science University, Gandhinagar.
They were adjudged third position and facilitated with a cheque of Rs 20,000 and a certificate by Union Minister for Animal Husbandry Parshottam Rupala and Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel on Friday at the ‘Shresth Pashupalak Purashkar’ function for the year 2023-24.
The Modis had started a dairy farm in Manipur village of Anand, 18 km from Vadodara, as a hobby six years ago. The farm, spread over six bighas of land, is now home to 80 geotagged Gir cows and 35 Jafarabadi buffaloes who are fed 100% organic feed. The genetic composition of each cow is certified by Anand Agricultural University. The couple supplies 300 liters of milk every day to over 200 families, including doctor friends and patients, who have switched to organic products.
The Modis have developed four varieties of flavored butter including ‘garlic herb’ and ‘orange cinnamon’, four varieties of paneer, eight varieties of ‘shrikhand’ or ‘matter’, A2 milk ghee, buttermilk, and ghee prepared using the ‘bilona/valonia’ method. These products are home-delivered to customers.
The cattle at this modern-day ‘tabela’ are fed chemical-free fodder. Cow urine and dung are used as natural fertilizers. The farm is also equipped with biogas plants.

Quota protests unite haves with power, clout & have-nots with poor farm yields
The Maratha community in Maharashtra is demanding reservation in education and employment. The government is under pressure to make a decision while ensuring that existing quotas for other communities remain unchanged. The government is issuing Kunbi caste certificates to Marathas to enable them to access OBC reservation benefits. The community is also demanding OBC status along with a quota. The Marathas have strong political representation but face economic disparities. Some experts suggest that the community should focus on skill-based education for upliftment instead of relying solely on reservations.
