Kolkata: Experiments that have succeeded in improving the fish population and diversity in Bengal’s rivers will now be the template for replication in South-East Asian countries that have a thriving fishing economy.
The Barrackpore-based ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), recognised as a knowledge hub on fisheries, will share the expertise on enhancement of fish population in rivers as well as cultivation of fish in wetlands and dams with 24 international delegates from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam.
The three major projects that will be taught at the workshop are ranching to increase fish population and diversity in rivers, pen culture to enhance fish cultivation in wetlands, and cage culture to increase fish production in dams. All three projects were perfected in Bengal before being replicated in other states
Ranching involves catching adult fish from rivers and breeding them in tanks under controlled environment to ensure spawning in large numbers before releasing the fish fingerlings in the river. Over the last five years, ICAR-CIFRI has released 92 lakh fingerlings of rohu, katla, mrigel and kalbasu varieties.
“We have released the fish in the Ganga and it has led to the improvement in the fish population and diversity all along the course of the river. The success has led to the extension of the project by a further two and a half years,” said ICAR-CIFRI director B K Das.
In the East Kolkata Wetlands as well as other water bodies in Beledanga, Duma and Chamardaha in North 24 Parganas, the institute conducted pen culture where fish were again grown till 35-40 cm before being released in wetland. This has led to production increasing by 2.5-3 times.
Similarly, cage culture was tried out in reservoirs, including Maithon in Damodar and Mukutmanipur in Subarnarekha that has led to a significant increase in fish production downstream.
The 13-day international workshop-cum-training programme at ICAR-CIFRI’s campus in Barrackpore will also include dairy enhancement training by National Dairy Research Institute and Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Kalyani.
“The programme will entail reviewing the current management practices, identifying and addressing the constraints, risks and other problems and proposal of possible improvements; demonstration of relevant technologies and skills that are essential for fisheries enhancement and dairy production in the context of food and nutritional security,” explained Das.

Vizag fishing harbour to be smoke-free zone
Visakhapatnam district officials plan to convert the Vizag fishing harbour into a no-smoking zone after a recent fire mishap. Fishermen leaving diesel tanks and cooking gas cylinders unattended on their boats pose a fire risk. The officials aim to enforce a no-smoking rule to prevent sparks from igniting combustibles like diesel, gas, wooden boats, and fishing nets. They will collaborate with other departments to implement the rule. The destroyed boats will be lifted from the sea, and the steel used in them will remain intact. The fishermen have not yet received the proposed insurance benefits for fishing vessels under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
