Hyderabad: A week after a couple were mowed down by a lorry in Military Dairy Farm area, a fibre cable company managing director and a manager of an infra firm along with the lorry owner were arrested by Bowenpally police on Saturday. Police also altered the IPC sections from negligence to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Apart from lorry owner Arjun Singh of Medak, Gaddam Purnachandar, MD of Bharat Fibernet, and K Raghavendra, senior project manager, Lakshmi Infrastructure and Developers India Private Ltd, were arrested for the March 24 night accident in which Akash Raj and his wife were killed.Akash and his wife were on their way to take part in a Holi celebration when the accident occurred.
The Fibernet MD and the infra manager were arrested for their gross negligence, police said. Police said that a motorist fell down near pillar No. 44 at the Dairy Farm crossroads because of a lowly hanging optical fiber cable. Other motorists, including Akash, stopped their bikes to help him. In the meantime, the lorry driver crashed through them, killing Akash’s wife on the spot. Akash succumbed later in a hospital.
“We also found that the contractor overseeing the road-widening works at the flyover construction site near pillar No. 44 has neglected to put in necessary safety measures, which led to the death of the couple,” police said. They also pointed to lack of proper lighting, cautionary signage, speed limit indicators and blinkers at the accident spot.
When police started the investigation to look into the circumstances that led to the accident, they also found out that the lorry’s life span had expired in 2018 but Arjun Singh continued to deploy the lorry despite being unfit and also did not undergo mandatory fitness test.
“Arjun Singh also sent away the lorry driver to avoid his arrest,” DCP (north zone) Rohini Priyadharshini told STOI.
