Rajasthan’s Gopalan Minister Joraram Kumawat Wednesday announced that cows will no longer be called strays in the state.
Kumawat, who is also the minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy, said that from now on stray bovines will be called nirashrit (destitute) in the state.
Replying to a debate on the grant demand of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department in the Rajasthan Assembly on Wednesday night, Kumawat said that “the cow, which we consider as our mother, and Nandi (bull), which is Lord Shiva’s vehicle, we cannot call them as strays.”
He said that it is right that the spoken word ‘stray’ got printed (in the budget) “but I declare in this House that it will be written everywhere that the cow progeny is besahara or nirashrit instead of stray.”
Earlier during the debate, Congress MLA from Sikar, Rajendra Pareek, referred to cows as “the mother of the world” and said that he was reading the budget where the cows have been mentioned as “strays.”
“Kyun bhai, wo awara kaisey ho gayin? (How can they be strays?) … What did they do? They were born in some house and you brought and left them on the road. That mute animal which can only explain itself to you just through their eyes, you called it awara. Please call it nirashrit (destitute). It is a destitute, not a stray. Don’t be embarrassed by calling them as strays.”
