Kochi: Distraught after having lost 13 of their 22 cattle in two days, the award-winning 15-year-old farmer Mathew Benny and his brother George Benny were in for some good news when the state government pledged support to them. Mathew had felt unwell and had to be hospitalized after the incident.
State animal husbandry and dairy development minister Chinchu Rani and water resources minister Roshy Augustine visited the boys at their home and promised to provide them with five high-yielding cows free of cost.“Cattle feed for one month and insurance will also be provided,” Chinchu Rani said. She said that efforts are on to ensure that all cattle in the state are insured. As of now, 60,000 cows are insured under Milma’s scheme. The insurance for dairy farmers will be implemented in a 60:40 ratio, she said. CPM too have offered to provide two cows to the boys.
The boys lost the cattle due to hydrocyanic acid poisoning after being fed dried tapioca hulls at a barn in Velliyamattom near Thodupuzha on Monday. The department managed to save nine cattle, including calves.
Film actors offer financial support
Actor Jayaram promised Rs 5 lakh aid to the young farmers which he handed over on Tuesday. He empathised with the boys and recalled the trauma when he lost cattle on his farm a few years ago. The Lulu group chairman also announced money and support to buy 10 cows. Thodupuzha MLA PJ Joseph announced that he would buy the boys a cow. Actor Mammootty offered Rs 1 lakh while Prithviraj offered Rs 2 lakh.
Mathew started managing the farm at the age of 13 after his father’s death. He also won the award for best child dairy farmer in 2021. With no insurance cover, their loss is estimated at around Rs 12 lakh.
