
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi condemned the growing violence all over the world and reaffirmed her commitment to peace and non-violence. Addressing freedom fighters at Rajnagar village, she said India was a powerful country, but it was harnessing its power for the good of the people and fighting against poverty.
Kurien’s stand
Rejecting the resignations of over 700 National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) officers, the board chairman, V Kurien indicated that since he seemed to be the target of attack, he ought to be the one to resign. Kurien told the secretary, R P Aneja, to request the board to stay on: “I have brought their feelings to the notice of the government at the highest levels.”
NSA for forgery
The government may invoke the National Security Act (NSA) to deal with those who counterfeit currency notes, Deputy Minister for Finance, Janardhan Poojary told the Lok Sabha. The minister, who was replying to a call attention motion on the discovery of an international gang in Bangkok dealing in counterfeits, said the government was examining whether the NSA should be used to deal with those who print and circulate forged currency.
Advice for PSUs
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has told the central ministries controlling about 15 public sector undertakings (PSUs) which are perpetually incurring heavy losses, to improve their functioning. She has written a letter to her Cabinet colleagues on the subject. Mrs Gandhi pointed out that since the problems of many units are managerial, the ministers concerned can make some changes in the system.
