An American yogurt company is inviting people to participate in its Digital Detox challenge, which offers to pay $10,000 (Rs. 8.3 lakh) to the winners. Siggi’s Dairy, which makes Icelandic-style yogurt, said participants who successfully give up their phone for a month will win the cash prize among other items.
A single continuous period of refraining from the use of one’s digital devices, including your phone, computer and social media, is known as a digital detox.
The contest was inspired by “Dry January” — except the abstinence practised by competitors will not be from alcohol but technology.
“We believe in the power of living a simpler life with fewer distractions,” siggi’s said. “One of the biggest distractions in our lives today is our phone. In fact, the average person spends 5.4 hours on their phones each day.”
Anyone who believes they can put their phone away in a lockbox for a month and is 18 or older can sign up for the program on or before January 31.
The essay will be judged on clarity, creativity and an “authentic expression of commitment to the challenge of living for a month without a smartphone.”
10 individuals will be selected to compete for prizes that include a vintage flip phone, a sim card with a month’s worth of balance and free siggi’s yogurt for three months.
The aggregate approximate retail value (ARV) of a single prize is $11,159—or Rs. 9.2 lakh.
