Kolhapur: Kolhapur’s guardian minister Hasan Mushrif suggested state government to consider Gokul dairy the state’s brand as Mahanand dairy, the existing state federation dairy of Maharashtra, has weakened.
Mushrif and Congress MLC Satej Patil were in Kolhapur to chair the function marking Gokul dairy’s achievement of regularly collecting 17.5 lakh litres of milk.
“Kolhapur Zilla Sahakari Dudh Utpadak Sangh, popularly known as Gokul dairy, is procuring milk inspite of making losses of Rs5.5 per litre. The competition is with Nandini dairy of Karnataka,” he said.
The minister added, “In Mumbai, Gokul’s cow milk supply has dropped as Nandini dairy offers cow milk with more fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) at the same rate. We have decided to supply cow milk with more fat and SNF than Nandini’s cow milk at the same rate. We have been assured by distributors of a daily sale of 1 lakh litres of cow milk in Mumbai.”
Mushrif further said that Gokul dairy should be given the status of a state-dairy. Two weeks ago, the Mahanand dairy was transferred to operate at National Dairy Development Board due to incurring financial losses and a significant drop in milk collection.
