Haveri: The dairy farmers’ Ugadi benefit of a Rs 4 increase in milk prices was undermined by Haveri Milk Union‘s initial reduction of Rs 3.5 per litre. Following farmers’ protests, the union revised its decision on March 7, implementing a Rs 2.5 increase. However, farmers remain dissatisfied with the union retaining Rs 1.5 per litre. The Farmers’ Association demands the Milk Federation rescind its Rs 1.5 reduction in milk prices and ensure equitable treatment for farmers. They warned of potential demonstrations if their concerns were not properly addressed. Despite receiving considerable govt assistance, including land allotment and funding for personnel, the newly established Haveri District Milk Federation faces a Rs 20 crore deficit within two years due to mismanagement driven by vested interests. The association clarifies that the previous management should be held accountable for these losses, not the farmers. They call upon district ministers and legislators to investigate the federation’s financial losses, conduct a thorough audit, and pursue legal action against those responsible. Manjnagouda Patil, president of Haveri Milk Union, responded by stating that they increased prices by Rs 2.5 per litre due to the deficit situation. “We will increase milk price for the welfare of farmers soon,” he assured.
