India has upheld its position on not providing a tariff rate quota for the import of milk and its products since 2014-15, according to a senior official from the commerce ministry.
Director General of Foreign Trade Santosh Kumar Sarangi disclosed that over the past 20 years, the import of milk and milk products under TRQ has been minimal, occurring only in three years.
Sarangi emphasized that no such imports have occurred since 2014-15. Since the fiscal year 2011-12, there has been no import of skimmed milk powder via the TRQ route.
The TRQ system allows the import of specific quantities of products at a reduced customs duty rate. This mechanism is commonly applied to agricultural products like cereals, meat, fruits, vegetables, and dairy.
Sarangi also debunked claims that the Indian government has granted new duty concessions for the import of corn and vegetable oils under TRQs.
“There are no new TRQs announced by the Government of India,” he confirmed.
