13 February 2025, New Delhi: India has achieved a significant milestone in milk production, with total output reaching 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24, a remarkable 63.55% increase from 146.31 million tonnes in 2014-15. This growth highlights the country’s continuous advancements in dairy farming and productivity enhancement.
While the productivity of indigenous bovine breeds remains lower than in advanced dairy nations, primarily due to low genetic potential and poor nutritional management, India has nonetheless made substantial progress in improving milk yield. The overall productivity of bovines has risen from 1,640 kilograms per animal per year in 2014-15 to 2,072 kilograms in 2023-24, marking an impressive 26.34% increase, the highest productivity gain recorded by any country globally.
Among different bovine categories, indigenous and non-descript cattle have shown a significant improvement, with productivity increasing from 927 kilograms per animal per year in 2014-15 to 1,292 kilograms in 2023-24, a 39.37% rise. Buffaloes have also witnessed a productivity increase from 1,880 kilograms per animal per year in 2014-15 to 2,161 kilograms in 2023-24, reflecting a 14.94% growth.
To further enhance milk production and productivity, the Rashtriya Gokul Mission aims to increase bovine productivity to 3,000 kilograms of milk per animal per year by 2030. The focus remains on improving genetic potential and ensuring better nutrition for dairy animals.
India’s dairy sector continues to be a key pillar of rural livelihoods, and with sustained efforts in breed improvement and nutritional management, the country is on track to further strengthen its position as a global dairy leader.
