Chennai: The capacity to procure milk would increase up to 66 lakh litres per day, dairy minister T Mano Thangaraj on Saturday said.
Replying to the debate on demand for grants, Mano Thangaraj said that Tamil Nadu presently had the capacity to procure 48 lakh litres per day. “Now, with additional capacity to procure 18.5lakh litres per day, our milk procurement capacity will be increased to 66lakh litres per day.”
The minister said the state was focused on improving quality of milk.“The fat content in the milk has been increased from 3.9% to 4.1%. Similarly, protein content has been increased from 8.0 to 8.1%. Also, farmers who supply quality milk are given additional ₹1 for every litre as incentive,” he said.
Mano Thangaraj announced that laboratories for quality check would be established in dairy cooperative unions in Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri and Karur at a cost of 2.34 crore.
The minister further said barring a couple of milk cooperative unions, others are making profit.
In another couple of months, all the cooperative unions would start making profit and so share and dividend would be increased for milk producers.
