Dehradun: Uttarkashi additional district magistrate Raza Abbas imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Gujarat-based Banaskantha district co-operative milk producers, a supplier to Amul, in a case related to food safety regulations. Officials from the food safety department said a sample of toned milk, procured in 2015 from a retail outlet in Manera, Uttarkashi district, was found to be substandard, as the solid-not-fat content was below the required standard.Following the lab report in 2016, the then food safety officer Ramesh Singh had registered a case against the supplier.
The co-operative society has been given a month to pay the penalty. Uttarkashi district food safety officer Ashwani Singh said the co-operative argued that the lab report was delayed, and by the time it arrived, the tetra pack of toned milk had already expired. The shelf life of these packs is 90 days. “However, the additional district magistrate did not accept this argument, noting that lab reports often come late,” Singh said. Pankul Sharma
