KARNAL: National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal celebrated National Milk Day on 26th November to commemorate the 102nd Birth Anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien who is regarded as the father of the white revolution in India.
Dheer Singh, Director, and Vice-chancellor of ICAR-NDRI said that India, Dr. Kurien’s ‘Operation Flood’ programme enabled India to become the World’s largest milk producer.
He said that with a rich history spanning over 100 years ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) holds a prominent position among institutes dedicated to the dairy sector. Through its extensive research and contributions, NDRI has played a pivotal role in the growth of the dairy industry and has been instrumental in India’s progress in milk production.
Singh said that the milk production of India has registered over 61 percent increase from 137.7 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 221.1 million tonnes in 2021-22. Indian dairy and animal husbandry sector contribution to its GDP is 4.5 percent which is valued about Rs 10 Lakh crore and is the highest in the world.
The director at present about 45 crore population of the country is directly associated with the dairy sector. India needs to produce 330 MMT of milk per annum by 2033 to meet the country’s demand for milk and milk products.
He said that National Milk Day serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the significance of dairy farming in India’s economy and its role in providing livelihoods to millions.
He further added that ICAR-NDRI is dedicately working on quality and safety of milk and milk products in order to ensure the quality. NDRI has already commercialized 124 technologies and patented 47 inventions.
A.K. Singh, Joint Director (Academic) said that NDRI is to nurture the dairy students in such a way that they should become “job providers” rather than job “seekers”. Student ready programme is one such initiative, where we provide oppourtunity to students i.e. “Earning while Learning”.
Rajan Sharma Joint Director (Research), said that two of NDRI’s B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) graduates who have been under incubation at Agribusiness Incubation Centre, NDRI have established a Startup named M/s Simras Foods Private Limited having the brand name “MightyMix”. Today this startup has launched “Sapt-grain Millet Cookies”. The specialty of these cookies is that they are made of seven grains viz. Oats, Ragi, Bajra, Jowar, Barley, Bengal gram, whole wheat etc.
