KARNAL: National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal received the Research Leadership Award 2023. The award was presented to Dheer Singh, Director, ICAR-NDRI and was presented by Arjun Munda, Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare at 14th Agriculture Leadership Conclave 2023 held at New Delhi on Thursday.
The award is given by Agriculture Today Group to institutes who have made noticeable contributions in research achievements, generated resources and established networks which accelerated the pace of research activities in that sphere.
Singh said that NDRI is a premier research and education institute of the country and has developed considerable expertise in different areas of Dairy Production, Processing, Management and Human Resource Development. The Institute has completed its glorious journey of 100 years in 2022. During these years, NDRI has made remarkable accomplishments, including groundbreaking research in cloning, rapid methods for quality testing of milk, animal feed technology, and the creation of innovative dairy products. This institute continues to be a driving force in revolutionizing the dairy industry.
He further informed that more than 80 technologies developed at the Institute have been commercialized and NDRI has taken initiative to protect its intellectual property generated through various innovations and since 2006, NDRI has filed a total of 84 patents and 43 (51%) have been granted.
Singh said that NDRI has also achieved success in securing significant external funding from renowned international and national agencies such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank, and various government departments and councils such as Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, and the Indian Council of Medical Research. In the area of Dairy Education, ICAR-NDRI has a status of Deemed University and offering B.Tech in Dairy Technology, Masters and Ph.D in 12 disciplines.
He further said that the Institute is committed to promote dairy research, education and outreach as dairying is emerging as a major game changer for transforming socio- economic lives of millions of farmers. He informed that NDRI was selected for this prestigious award by a jury chaired by Former Chief Justice of India, Justice P Sathasivam. He expressed confidence that such awards will motivate scientists to do more innovations in the dairy science.
