Ludhiana: Rajya Sabha Member and environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal conducted inspections at more than half a dozen dairies, including those in Bhukhri Khurd, on Wednesday. He found that roads surrounding these dairies were covered in cow dung and urine, contributing to the pollution of the Buddha Dariya.
Concerned by the situation, Seechewal directed additional municipal commissioner Paramdeep Singh Khaira to take strict action against negligent officials. He stressed that those responsible for polluting the river should face consequences without leniency.
As part of the Seechewal model, efforts to construct a pond in Bhukhri Khurd are underway. Two large excavator machines have been working for the past four days to clear dung from the village pond. During a meeting with district officials, Seechewal provided updates on a special campaign launched on Dec 22, 2024, aimed at preventing contaminated and toxic water from flowing into the Buddha Dariya. He noted that large-scale disposal of cow dung by dairies was obstructing the river’s flow and emphasised the urgency of corrective measures.
The meeting was attended by several key officials, including local bodies department’s chief executive officer (CEO) Deepti Uppal, municipal commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, joint commissioner Paramdeep Singh Khaira, subdivisional magistrate (SDM) Jasveer Kaur Bhullar, and representatives from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), drainage department, panchayat department, Glada (Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority), electricity department, and fire protection office.
This initiative marks a crucial step in restoring the Buddha Dariya to a pollution-free state. Seechewal reaffirmed his commitment to supporting and collaborating on environmental conservation efforts.
