According to his family, he had been ill for a few days and died of a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
He is the son of late Shanmukhappa Basappa Sidnal, a four-time MP from Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency and the son-in-law of VRL Group Chairman Vijay Sankeshwar.In 2004, Shivkant also contested elections as a candidate of the Kannada Nadu Party from Kittur assembly constituency. TNN
