In a shocking case of food adulteration, a businessman from Uttar Pradesh, Ajay Agrawal, has been arrested for allegedly producing 500 litres of fake milk using just one litre of chemicals. The owner of Agarwal Traders, Ajay Agrawal was apprehended in Bulandshahr after raids conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at his shop and storage facilities.
Authorities revealed that Ajay Agrawal had been selling synthetic milk and paneer for nearly two decades, using harmful chemicals in the process.
Following the raid at the locations, the officials confiscated pre-mixed chemicals. “Agarwal has not yet revealed the chemicals he used to create the fake milk. But with only 5 mg, he could create up to 2 litres of fake milk,” officials told the media, further adding that he would use flavouring agents to cover the smell, appearance and taste of the synthetic milk from the real one.

A video shows the officials giving a demo of how the adulterated milk was produced. One of them shows a pre-mixed white solution which he claimed prepared with several harmful chemicals to create a bottle of milk. A small portion of the chemical is poured into natural water with milk flavours, artificial sweeteners and another solution to increase its bulk density. “The ingredients including the flavour and the sweetener will make people believe the authenticity of the milk,” the official added.
In addition to the milk formula, the officials also claimed that the sweeteners seized from the godown were expired. Meanwhile, other chemicals included caustic potash, milk permeate powder, whey powder, sorbitol and refined soya fats.
While the police are currently questioning Ajay Agarwal and his subordinates to learn about the formula, an investigation is also underway to find out the buyers of the fake milk from his factory. “We are trying to find out where he supplied the milk products in the last six months,” said Vinit Saxena, an FSSAI official, as quoted by Moneycontrol.
It is worth mentioning that nearly half of the dairies in India fall into the unorganised sector, causing the adulteration of milk and other dairy products to remain rampant. As a result, checks to ensure quality become challenging, allowing unorganised sectors to indulge in illegal activities to turn the liquid into value-added items.
