
Tunga, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), made a breakthrough on Wednesday at the Kadugondanahalli (K G Halli) Station near Arabic College in Bengaluru after completing 1,184.4 m of tunnelling. Tunnelling work at this stretch started on October 31.
Earlier, Tunga had finished tunnelling work of 1,064 m between Venkateshpura Station and Shadhi Mahal Shaft in Bengaluru.
With the latest breakthrough, of the total 20,992 m (20 km) of tunnelling work, 18,832.3 m (18 km) is complete or 89.70 per cent.
The tunnelling work is a part of Pink Line’s Phase 2 (Reach 6) work to connect Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara.
Earlier, TBM Rudra completed tunnelling work between Lakkasandra station and Langford Town Metro station. The TBM had completed 613.3 m between South Ramp and Dairy Circle Station and 746.2 m between Dairy Circle station and Lakkasandra station. Rudra has completed 100 per cent tunnelling work between Lakkasandra and Langford Town Metro stations.
With Wednesday’s breakthrough, the twin tunnels on the Pink Line connecting South Ramp to Venkateshpura are further ready for civil works. Under this phase, the BMRCL is building a tunnel network from Dairy Circle to Nagawara, covering Lakkasandra, Langford Town, Indian Military School, MG Road, Shivajinagar, Cantonment Railway Station, Pottery Town, Tannery Road, Venkateshpura and Kadugondana Halli.
A total of nine TBMs have been deployed to build the tunnel in Reach-6 and seven of them have completed their respective tunnelling works.
