Key Focus on Veterinary Services, Dairy Policy, and Commercialization of Cow Urine
The Uttar Pradesh Livestock and Dairy Development Department is set to convene a crucial meeting at the Maha Kumbh on February 8 to discuss significant reforms in the livestock and dairy sector. The meeting will address the revision of the Dairy Policy 2022, expansion of veterinary hospital services, and strategies to strengthen milk cooperatives, an official statement said on Thursday.
Major Reforms Under Discussion
The state government is committed to improving animal healthcare services and increasing milk production. One of the key initiatives includes making veterinary hospitals operational 24/7 across all districts. Currently, veterinary ambulance services are available only during the day, but efforts are underway to provide nighttime assistance as well. Each hospital will be equipped with veterinarians, paramedical staff, and 1,962 ambulance services to support farmers and livestock owners round the clock.
Commercial Use of Cow Urine and Economic Sustainability
In a bid to make cow shelters self-sustainable, the government is working on a plan to commercialize cow urine in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and corporate partners. The initiative aims to procure cow urine for the production of phenyl, pesticides, and organic fertilizers, promoting eco-friendly products and boosting rural employment.
Strengthening the Dairy Industry
The meeting is also expected to approve amendments to the Dairy Policy 2022, aligning it with new industrial and food processing policies to further boost the dairy sector. The government has set an ambitious target of doubling milk production over the next five years, positioning Uttar Pradesh as a leading milk-producing state in the country.
Path Ahead
The proposals finalized in the February 8 meeting will be presented to the state cabinet for final approval. These initiatives are expected to enhance the dairy ecosystem, ensure better livestock management, and support farmers in achieving higher productivity and profitability.
With its focus on modernization and sustainable practices, the Uttar Pradesh government is taking significant steps to transform the livestock and dairy industries, setting a benchmark for the rest of the country.
